I picked up new eyeglasses tonight. While I was there, a woman came in with a 4 or 5 year old little tornado. The woman looked like she had suffered some type of eye trauma so she brought her mom in for moral support and to help watch the little girl.
The child was adorable and walked from customer to customer as if she was waiting on them. “Do you need any help?” “Do your eyes hurt?” “Do you need to see a doctor?” By the time she started “helping” the 5th customer, the entire store knew her script pretty well. She asked everyone the exact same questions in the exact same way.
I was on the other side of the store but she soon found me…..and I was prepared to play along with her…..“Thank you sooooo much for your help! No, my eyes don’t hurt. No, I don’t need to see a doctor”.
She got close to me and looked straight up at me. “Do you need any help?” “Do your eyes hurt?” “Do you need to see a doctor?” I smiled….she continued. “Do you have a baby?” Woa. Huh? Wuh? You didn’t ask anyone else that question!
Her grandma came to get her and I never had to get into the “infertility/childlessness/sometimes your dreams die in a doctor’s office” conversation with someone 1800 days old…which probably worked out better for everyone.
While driving out of the parking lot, Craig told me that a.) he heard her ask me if I had a baby and b.) he braced for impact not knowing how it would affect me.
Some days it would have brought me to my knees. Today, it just made me laugh.
